Forces of resonance

Garage Gallery, Mullumbimby NSW

Forces of Resonance brings together the practices of emerging artists Victoria Rehn and Ivonne Rother, whose works explore the invisible forces that shape identity, memory, and belonging. Working from deeply personal perspectives, both artists navigate the space between their countries of origin and the cultures they now call home, reflecting on adaptation, resilience, and the enduring connections that exist across distance.

Victoria Rehn’s sculptural practice draws upon the mythical narratives and traditions of her homeland, Sweden. Preferring natural materials including feathers, horn, and scrap leather, and incorporating found objects, she creates assemblages and textile works that carry echoes of ancestral storytelling while responding to her life in Australia.

These works exist within the space between old and new homes, where memory is transformed with care, vulnerability, and ritual. Through materiality and form, Victoria explores how personal experience becomes embedded within objects, revealing the quiet forces that connect ancestry and place.

Victoria Rehn is an emerging artist from Sweden, currently living and working on Bundjalung Country. She moved to Australia in 2008 and graduated from the Byron School of Art in 2023, completing the Alumni Year in 2025.

Ivonne Rother, born in Germany, investigates how the inner emotional world shapes the external language of painting. Her abstract works unfold through an intuitive yet considered process that embraces both intention and intuition. Expressive brushstrokes move freely across individual surfaces, dissolving physical boundaries and creating a dialogue between opposing emotional forces of light and darkness, freedom and restraint, certainty and ambiguity. Carefully selected colours blend instinctively, allowing unexpected moments of discovery to emerge. The resulting works invite the viewer into an experience of movement and transformation, reflecting the emotional landscapes that shape our sense of self.

Ivonne Rother is an emerging artist from Germany who moved to Australia 2007. She graduated from the Byron School of Art in 2024 and completed the Alumni Year in 2025. She also lives and works on Bundjalung Country in Northern New South Wales.

Forces of Resonance is an exhibition that considers the unseen energies that is connecting people to landscape and lived experience, inviting the audience to contemplate the forces that shape who we are and where we belong.
